Altura, a special place in Algarve

An old fishing town, Altura is nowadays a special place to me, in the south of Portugal, located between Manta Rota and Praia Verde, and a few kilometres from Spain. Praia da Alagoa (name of the beach of Altura) presents us an extensive beach with white sand, that provides long walks and in the low tide, it forms small lagoons that probably must gave the name to this town. The waters temperature is the hottest in Portugal and the fauna is quite interesting (you can find many seagulls, beach pilgrims, crabs, small starfish, and many types of fish). Sometimes we can see dolphins migrating. Besides, this is a beach awarded with blue flag and is full of shells and small pebbles that delight tourists. In summer, the sea is almost quiet, but there are frequent upwellings (streams that come from the Strait of Gibraltar - or Southeastern) where you can enjoy some waves!

The town itself, is small and quite pleasant, mostly formed by small houses with one or two floors that present us with typical details of old Islamic culture. Examples of this are the chimneys. The place is very flat and that provides ride cycling for all ages without major concerns. For example you can visit Tavira or Conceição de Tavira without stepping on E.N. 125! In summer, the nights always have a lot of excitement with the streets full of people enjoying the calm and tranquillity of this small place on the Algarve coast.

Gastronomy, (an important deal to me case i like to travel but always with satisfied stomach) this is the ideal place for lovers of fresh fish case they can count with a great variety of fish, from sea bass, anchovies, sardines, mackerels, gilthead, tuna bellies ... etc. All with a huge freshness and quality. But if you prefer meat (like beef) don't worry! You have several places where you can delight as "Infante", a restaurant near the main entrance of Altura, whwn you came from Via do Infante, where you can taste dishes with a divine presentation and above average quality (prices are also slightly above average LOL, for example a meal where you eat a chop or medallions of Veal (from Barrosã) you will not be for less than 25/30 euros)!

One thing you must do at least once is to get up early and go see the sunrise! In summer the sun rises almost at sea, just behind Monte Gordo, in Spain and is painted with orange tones! Have a look at the photos!
